Brief History of Medicinal Silver


Silver has been used for its healing properties since ancient times. Silver was commonly used for the preservation of water and food. Hippocrates used silver to heal wounds, to control the spread of infection, and to treat ulcers.

In the Middle East, medicinal silver has been used since 700 A.D. for things like blood purification, heart conditions, and halitosis. 



Some Russian armies used water casks lined with silver to sanitize their drinking water all the way up until World War II. 

In the late 1800's several scientists began finding that minute concentrations of silver had antimicrobial properties. Silver was also observed to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum, or blindness in newborns. By the 1900's silver nitrate was commonly used in the U.S. to prevent blindness in newborns.

Modern Research and Use of Silver

As time went on, more and more has been discovered about the use of medicinal silver. In 1910 Henry Crookes discovered that silver in a colloidal state was harmless to humans while still having germicidal action. Until about 1940, Silver was the main antibiotic used in the medical world.



After reviewing all the silver literature of the past 200 years that he could find, Alan B.G. Lansdown said, "Metallic silver and silver compounds are used widely in medical devices and health care products to provide anti-bacterial and anti-fungal action. Experience has shown that they are generally safe in use and effective in controlling pathogenic organisms."

The End of Antibiotics

About 80 years ago, antibiotics were discovered. Antibiotics are man-made, synthetic chemicals that kill certain bacteria by interfering with various processes in the synthesis of the cell wall or proteins of the bacteria.
