Cold and flu season is right around the corner but before it hits, there are plenty of ways to prepare your family.

  1. Stock the medicine cabinet- Make sure you have the basics of cold and flu season such as cough drops, cold and sinus medicines, decongestants, antihistamines, cough drops and more. Expired medicines should also be removed.
  2. Wash hands - Teach little ones the proper way to wash hands by using the old trick of singing "Happy Birthday" twice. Adults should also be mindful of lathering with soap for 20 seconds.
  3. Stock up on health supplies- You don't want to be running to the grocery store for tissues while your nose is already running, so make sure you buy ahead of time. Stock up on other products like humidifiers, soap and hand sanitizer.
  4. Buy foods and drinks that fight colds- Have supplies for chicken noodle soup on hand, herbal teas, Vitamin C tablets, ice pops and other foods and drinks that are comforting when sick.
  5. Get the flu shot- Getting a yearly flu shot is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick. The vaccine protects against the most common strains, and researchers believe this year's flu will be especially effective compared to the last year.
  6. Clean the house- Make sure to keep up on cleaning before the windows stay shut for the fall and winter. Replace filters in the home, have air ducts cleaned, do a heavy duty dusting and make sure surfaces are cleaned regularly to stop the spread of germs.
  7. Know your sick day policy- Make sure you know your work policy for sick days ahead of time and have a plan in place. If you child gets sick and you are not able to be home with them, make sure to have emergency contacts that can pick them up from school and look after them on days they won't be in class.
