I am always surprised to learn that a lot of folks feel like smoothie bowls are hard to make. They’re so easy! A friend asked me once, “So…it’s like a smoothie that you pour into a bowl instead of a cup?” And she was basically right. A smoothie bowl is a smoothie that you pour into a bowl, but before serving you top with fruit, nuts, seeds, chocolate chips, coconut or anything else you like to add a little bit of extra texture and nutrition.



You can build your own smoothie bowl by making your favorite smoothie recipe, then pouring it into a bowl and topping it with extra ingredients. So, if you’re making a cherry and mango smoothie, set aside some extra cherries and mango pieces, and pile them on top before serving. Maybe add a handful of walnuts or pumpkin seeds for crunch, if you want. Your only limit is what’s in your pantry!

Making Smoothie Bowls Simple
I think that what might overwhelm folks about smoothie bowls is the idea that you need fancy pants ingredients to make a good one, and I can see how people would get that impression. Finding healthy smoothie bowls without specialty ingredients like maca powder or cacao nibs is kind of tricky.

Compiling this list wasn’t as simple as I thought it would be. You’ll see below that some of the recipes I’ve chosen include special ingredients, but don’t worry! I’ve got substitutes listed for you, as needed.

1. Strawberry Banana Smoothie Bowl – It doesn’t get more simple than strawberry and banana. Just leave out the optional hemp seeds, if you can’t find them. You can use more pepitas—aka pumpkin seeds—instead.

2. Super Green Smoothie Bowl – This recipe offers plenty of options and variations to help you build your own delicious smoothie bowl. If you can’t find an ingredient, just leave it out!

3. Chia Mango Smoothie Bowl – This bowl is part smoothie bowl, part chia pudding and all totally delicious!

4. Pumpkin Smoothie Bowl – Bring on the fall flavors with this beautiful bowl of pumpkin goodness!

5. Cucumber Smoothie Bowl - Refreshing cucumber pairs up beautifully with cherries, mangoes, and lemon in this breakfast treat.

6. Maple-Chai Smoothie Bowl – If you don’t want to add the maple syrup in this recipe, you can substitute 2-3 soaked dates for sweetness instead.

7. Chocolate Covered Cherry Smoothie Bowl – Chocolate for breakfast? Don’t mind if I do!

8. Grapefruit Smoothie Bowl – Use agave nectar or dates in place of the honey to make this tart-yet-sweet smoothie bowl totally vegan.
